I have worked the majority of my life, I am a degree’d professional with over 30 years experience and have never had a job with a “Work Life Balance” or anything close, even before the catch phrase was invented. Think about it, the hours you work is up to your employer, not you. You hire into an environment, you don’t get to create it. You might be able to argue that hourly people have A Work Life Balance, they work their shift and go home and if they do work extra hours they get paid overtime. However, in today’s job market they also, in many cases, don’t get the same benefits. Not to mention they’re also not guaranteed 40 hours. The employer trend seems to be working hourly people 32 to 39 hours to avoid giving benefits, yet your considered “Full Time.” So you may have A Work Life Balance but in essence aren’t you paying for it? The employer just makes it sound as though their giving it to you as a benefit for working there. Now my previous jobs, I’ve always been salaried and required to put in a minimum 70 hour work week, leaning more towards 80+. So no matter what, half my weekly efforts where free! Where’s the Work Life Balance in that? Oh, I made good money if you based in on a 40 hour work week, like my employer did, but when I divided my hours into my pay, it hardly seemed worth it. In 30 years, I have missed so much time with my family, I had NO life. I was called a work-a-holic, told I was married to my job, that my life was passing me by all like I had a choice. Honestly, in my opinion, NO ONE works for free because they want to make their employer rich, and thrives on that once a year review so they can be shown how much they’re appreciated, with a 2-5 percent raise, if that much, and allowed to keep their job. So with all of this being said, I firmly believe there is no such thing as A Work Life Balance when you work for someone else. If you want it, you have to create it by being your own boss. What drives us to stomach the employer abuse is fear. Fear of not being able to pay our bills, feed our children, etc. So why not funnel that fear into being your own boss, at least you can get paid for your effort, cut out a few hours early and not suffer, pay yourself what your really worth and have the time to enjoy your life, now that’s A Work Life Balance. Isn’t that what employees provide for the Company Owner(s)? I now know what employer’s really mean by A Work Life Balance that’s why I am self-employed. To read more click my link below.
