Ok, you have the idea..now what do you do next?

For many people especially parents running their own business and having the ability to fit work around the family is the answer to their dreams. The easy part is coming up with the idea, the harder bit is getting the business off the ground and running.

Here are some very useful tips to help get your business off to a flying start….

Support. Who can help you out? Join a women’s forum network, contact your local enterprise agency, there you will get free advice and are able to arrange free business start-up courses. Join online forums and ‘draw’ on peoples experiences and expertise..the internet is so vast and a lot of research can be done just by sitting in front of the computer.

Expenses. What are you going to spend? If possible, estimate what sort of funds you will need, not only over the next year but over the next five years maybe, take a more broader estimation. You will need some start-up costs such as, stationary, a simple website, e-mail addresses..these are considered essential investments. Also you will need a computer too. You will need an additional business phone line and number, don’t confuse it with your home number etc..keep separate. Maybe also consider a business mobile too.

Equipment. Plan out what equipment you will need, that all depends on the type of business you intend to start. Plan out the basics and make a guess as to when you will need to replace things.

Location, Location! Where are you going to work? Maybe, if possible at home is the best way to go initially. There are certain tax benefits or advantages if you set aside a room part of the time for your business. Be mindful if you are selling products. Stock will grow over time and living space will be limited eventually. Check out the costs of renting a unit at the local business center.

Marketing. How will you let the world know about your new business..how will you boost it?

Allow a budget for advertising and promotion. There are some ways to get free publicity, check out your local newspaper. Also run some flyers off on your home printer initially, but eventually you will save by buying in bulk from your printer.

I hope these useful tips will help you plan properly for your new business venture, and good luck!
