So you have had enough of your boss telling you what, where, when, how and why to do your work. Would it not be great if he or she was not around to do that? Would it not be better if you were making those decisions? Let me tell you, it sounds very sweet, but it might not be all that you think it is. First of all you have to take additional time to choose the best decisions, second you need to realize that there will always be someone giving you reasons to do your work the way you do it, third if you like to be in charge so much, then you might no be a good business partner, or even boss yourself, and fourth you might be your own boss but only in your area of expertise, everywhere else you will still be the same.
Your boss makes decisions on how to do your job based on what his bosses, which could be higher management or clients, want him to do. When you are the boss, as you are planning or thinking about doing, you will be the one who will be listening to your clients, you will be adapting, adjusting constantly to the never ending dynamic flow of business currents. It takes experience, intuition and risk taking to finally be able to have some kind of a stable path in which you could consider yourself “your own boss”. The most common ways to achieve that stability is to have sound financial practices such as continuous savings deposits, specialize in an area of your business that you are very familiar with, and avoid clients that will make you work more than what is worth. Caution: avoid them before you commit to serve them, a good practice to do that is to refer them to your competition.
On the topic of clients and customers it is important to mention that it is they who pay you so in a way, they are your bosses. So why start a business? you may ask. Because you have the ability to choose who your boss will be. You can also change your business so you can choose how you boss will give you orders. You can even fine tune your venture to have reasons why your bosses (clients) will direct your actions. The where and when will also be controlled by you in your own unique way.
Being in control is a main reason why you chose to start a business, it is a perfectly good reason. Just remember that being in control does not always equate to business success. You maybe excellent at what you do but not at the routinely administrative tasks of running a business, maybe you are great at closing deals but not so good at marketing. You will most likely need others to help your business succeed and grow. You can still be in control and allow your business partners and employees enough freedom to make your business a success, in short you will need leadership.
Last but not least, you will be you own boss at what you do, but most likely that is where being your won boss ends.
Your capacity as an individual is endless, but as stated before true leadership is the mark of success. You need to step back when it is another person turn to guide. Enabling others in your business with multiply its chances of success many times more.
