In 1970, Dante Stephenson, owner of the famous Dante’s Down the Hatch restaurant in Atlanta, told me, “When you do something that you really enjoy doing, you will never work again!” Dante is still successfully operating his restaurant in 2009, with many of his same crew members that have been with him for decades! They all sincerely are passionate about what they do and, as a result, the customers love to go there and be ‘infected’ with this great attitude and the environment that the crew has created. Now Dante’s job is to roam around the place, mingling with the customers and sharing good times. You can easily tell that he thoroughly enjoys what he is doing - even after more than 30 years! So many people trudge through life doing whatever is necessary or convenient to put a roof over their heads and bread on the table. It seems that they take whatever life deals to them and then find ways to ‘make do’ in that setting. As immature teenagers, many people choose a course of study in college and then end up doing this their whole life because of that decision. Their dreams do not ever get fulfilled and they fall into a routine of mediocrity. What a waste of talent, skills and passion this can be. When their feet hit the floor in the morning, many people are likely to say “Good God, it’s morning!” Thus they begin yet another dull and lifeless day of their dull and lifeless existence. How miserable is that life? Others who are doing what they enjoy, spring from the bed and say “Good morning, God, thanks for another wonderful day!” They are anxious to pursue their passions and to provide as much benefit as possible to our society as they can! They are excited about the day and the opportunities that they have in front of them. What a difference such an attitude makes, not only to that person, but to their family and all others with whom they come in contact! Have you ever given much thought as to just what it is that you really, really enjoy doing? Well, why not consider finding a way to transform that passion of yours into a productive endeavor? You likely have some experiences, skills, or knowledge that you can use to “carve out your niche.” If you can do this, you will likely be far more productive, both in general results and in financial terms, and you will feel more confident and fulfilled. When you are working within your passions, you are more interested and engaged and, over time, your endeavors will be much less like ‘work’ and much more enjoyable! Just like Dante, when you are doing what you really and truly enjoy, those around you will also be tremendously affected. Your loved ones will find you more interesting and fun to be around and they will share in your excitement. It spreads through a family like a virus! Sooner or later, your mate and other family members will sense a difference in your attitude and a little spring in your step! Before long, everybody in the family will perk up and follow your lead.
