When it comes to dating, everyone knows that there are certain expectations when it comes to connecting two parties for their mutual benefit. There are items that are deal breakers, or deal makers. It’s a blind date, with myself as the matchmaker. Part of my job as a client representative is to make sure that the inventor has been prepared to make a good first impression. A simple evaluation is step one. What is the ‘personality’ of the product? How would your product’s ‘personal ad’ read? Here I’m looking for a brief summary of the idea or invention, no longer than one page. It’s good to include some competitive and Intellectual Property research. Who is the targeted market? What is its potential size? Are there any similar products on store shelves, online, or in catalogues? How does this new product compare? How is it unique or different? What clear benefits are there for users? Does it solve a problem? Is the idea patentable, has there been a patent search performed, or a Provisional Patent Application made? Like a date,’looks’ are also important in this matchmaking process, so that there should be a photograph, a PowerPoint presentation, a video, a website, a rough prototype or sample that conveys the excitement and functionality of the idea proposed. People are visual, as everyone knows, personal ads with a photo always generate a better response, likewise, new product ideas need to be more than words. If you want to make a match, make certain that you have all the elements needed to be attractive to manufacturers. Nathanial Wish is president of NatWish LLC.
