If you are thinking of starting a business weather it going to be your full time income or just a side job do it right the first time. You don’t want to make mistakes and find out that you are breaking a business law or you have tax violations. Before you go any further do some research to what it takes. There are many books that will give you a lot of information as well as resources on the internet. After you have decided on what type of business, product and a good name its time to go to a lawyer.
No one likes lawyers until you need them. This is a good time to need one because they will make sure that you are not missing anything and that you are not skipping any steps. They will also give you more ideas to where you can go to educate yourself more. It will cost some money, but in the end it will be worth it. You need to expect to spend some money and in the long run a lawyer will probably save you money. Unless you are spending massive amount of time, chances are it will not be that expensive to take an afternoon with a lawyer. You will also need to determine if you want an LLC, Corp, or INC. A lawyer is a good reference to help you because they will tell you the reasons behind each one and you can decide what you want depending on your business goals.
Next you will need to have Federal ID number. This is used for tax purposes to identify your business. Sometimes in order to open an account they will require this number or a social security number. It is much better to provide this number and keep your social to yourself. Every state is different, but chances are they state you live in will require some kind of registration that you have to pay for in order to get an ID number. The best place to learn about this is to go on your state website they will give you information what registrations you need as well as if you need a particular license for what you are selling.
Once tax season comes around it will be very important to have all of these registrations in order because if your company is not properly registered it may cost you a lot of money in the future. Do everything right the first time and take your time so you will not have to take more time in the future fixing the mistakes you made.
