When times are hard it’s so easy to wallow. The media enjoys bombarding us with every micro-tick of the market as well as spattering negative statistics in the headlines. If it bleeds it leads. So it is no wonder the average person becomes disheartened and discouraged when thinking about the economy. Add to this a set-back like losing your job or having your business credit line closed and you have the perfect storm for personal depression within the recession. What can you do to combat this assault? Start thinking like an entrepreneur.

After years of teaching and coaching entrepreneurs I created a specialized course that focuses on the core competencies of successful entrepreneurs. The business owners that consistently come out on top share these qualities:

• Good product or service idea
• Strong desire to succeed
• Flexibility in the face of change
• Delegation skills
• Willingness to risk and make mistakes
• Ability to negotiate
• Presentation and sales skills
• Financial literacy

The good news is that you can develop each of these areas if you are not already thinking like an entrepreneur. Successful entrepreneurs (as well corporate types) think in a different way than the average person. They are focused on solutions and always seeking a new and better way to “get there”. Learning to think as they do can improve your business or corporate career. What does this look like for you?

In a job interview-focus on the solutions you bring to employer problems, present yourself as the greatest “product” you’ve ever sold and show that can learn and adapt.

When evaluating your business-carefully examine your skill set and those of your team. Make sure that you match tasks to talents.

Launching a new project or business-always remember that YOU are your brand. Whether climbing the corporate ladder or making your entrepreneurial mark on the world, you are selling yourself and your reputation. It is essential that you convey confidence. Think like an entrepreneur and look beyond the recession and depression to the hidden opportunities.
