Are you familiar with the term entrepreneurial burnout? You’ll know what I’m talking about if you are feeling tired and stressed to the max. And you’re not alone. If you’re an Internet entrepreneur, you will know all about the overload that is generated by the sheer volume of information online. Internet entrepreneurs have their own set of stressors that comes with information overload. The result is a lack of focus on essential business activities, which leads to feeling overwhelmed and out of control.
The following eight essential coping skills will help you gain back control of yourself and your online business:
Eight Essential Coping Skills to Combat Burn-out and Stress:
- Identify the business tasks and activities that are most important to you. These should specifically move you closer to your goals. Re-prioritize your time in order to spend at least some of your energy every day on taking action to move towards these goals, even if you have only half an hour to do so. If you take consistent action to accomplish your goals, your life will feel more meaningful.
- Unsubscribe from all online newsletters that aren’t absolutely essential in your line of work. Stay away from online forums for a week (or a month, or forever) unless you urgently need feedback or help. Limit the time that you allow yourself to surf the web. Get back to basics in terms of where you focus your attention.
- One of the key symptoms of entrepreneurial burnout is a struggle to maintain a healthy balance between work and other life commitments. Make it a priority to schedule time for fun and relaxation. Block off time in your calendar to go to the gym, enjoy a hobby, or spend an afternoon with your family. Go to the beach and enjoy the beautiful weather. Travel for enjoyment, not just for business. If you leave these things to chance, work will almost always win out.
- Get into the habit of outsourcing activities that you don’t absolutely have to do yourself. For example, make use of ghost-writers to write your articles or develop content for your website. This will free up your time to focus on the business essentials that only you can take responsibility for.
- Make a conscious decision to give back of your time, talents and treasure to the world on a consistent basis. Decide on a percentage, even if it is only 1%, and commit to giving it no matter what state your business is in. You’ll feel absolutely wonderful if you form a habit to share your success with the world.
- Find a like-minded peer group to socialise with, learn from and create partnerships with.
- If you find yourself getting negative and stuck in feeling sorry for yourself, knock yourself out of that non-productive state by increasing your gratitude. The more you’re grateful, the more you’re going to get of whatever you’re grateful for.
- Consciously choose to be happy and optimistic. Enjoy life!
Prevention is often better than cure when it comes to entrepreneurial burnout. Don’t wait until it’s too late.
