You see it all the time. You’ve just done a search in Google or your favorite search engine and you find a listing that appears to be exactly what you are looking for in results. You click on the link and get delivered to a flash presentation about the company, or the location, or whatever. Now you have to wait for that to finish and then you are transferred to a web page that has everything but what you’re looking for or if it does you can’t find it.

Here’s another situation you see often. You do the same thing as above but you want to call or actually visit the company location for whatever reason. No address or phone number is to be found on the home page. OK, so now you look around for a link to contact information and it only gives an email address, and a generic one like info at whatever. Yea, that will get a quick response.

And the winner of the worst website mistake? You’ve found the magic widget that you always wanted and want to buy it. You look around and can’t see where to click to buy. Then you finally find it, click on it, and go to a series of 5 screens that ask you inane questions like your mother’s maiden name, the last time you saw their commercials, and how many pets you have (when it’s not a pet related item you want to buy). OK, you suffer through these web pages and finally are at the actual purchase page and you see that the shipping is more than the cost of the item. Any sane person at that point clicks off the page and goes for a cup of coffee or something stronger.

As much time, effort, and money that website owners spend on getting a viable buyer to their website they often forget the user experience factor in their website design. Making it difficult for the user to find what they came for is insane but you see it often. Making it even harder for a potential buyer to complete a purchase adds insult to injury and you will never see that potential buyer again. Not to mention the bad word of mouth that every upset user is bound to offer to anyone who will listen.

It’s a good idea to have a great visual appearance, nice graphics, and even videos and sound. But not at the expense of the user finding what they want quickly. User navigation is critical. You should have contact and address information on ever single web page on your website. You should also have an easy to see and understand navigation menu or links on every single web page.

And never make it difficult for the potential buyer to actually make a purchase. It’s great to get a little feedback but don’t let it get in the way of a quick purchase. Make big and noticeable buy buttons; keep the procedure as simple and easy as possible to complete the purchase. Have you ever checked to see how many buyers have backed out of the purchase pages? You should check that often and continually try to make it easy and quick for the visitor to buy.

Three simple areas to always double check and insure that are in place throughout the entire website. Contact information that is easy to find and actually provides real information. User friendly and easy to understand navigation menus and links to find anything fast on your website. Easy to find buy buttons and purchase procedures that are simple and quick. And it doesn’t hurt to check up on where and why a user leaves your website too.
